On Monday April 22nd, 2013 the Salt Lake Running Company organized a special last-minute 5K fundraiser for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. We signed up as fast as we could online once the email arrived on Thursday night (the server kept crashing due to so many people trying to register). This was really such an awesome event, and we felt so honored to be a part of it!
There was a huge turnout! We heard estimates of over 2,000 people (and A LOT of furry four-legged friends).
The awesome tech shirts designed for the event were donated by ALTRA (shout out for their ultimate coolness!!). If you would like one of these cool shirts, you can order one at this online order page (while supplies last). Or, donate to the official fundraising site directly at ONE FUND BOSTON. 100% of the proceeds from the shirts go to the Boston Fund.
All proceeds of this event and shirt sales go directly to the official Boston fund. So far, they have raised over $20K from this event. More coolness!
The event began with a moment of silence, and someone sang the national anthem while we all saluted the american flag. We all got a wee bit teary-eyed, and it was definitely a great bonding moment (Kudos to the anthem singer – we couldn’t see her through the crowd and don’t know her name, but she did a great job)
Then B.J. ushered us to the start line with the Flag, and led the crowd in some power squats to warm us up – and we were off! We were cheered on the race course by random locals that stood on their front porches or at the water stop waving signs, flags, or just shouting out their encouragement!
“GO USA!”, “YOU CAN DO IT!”, “BOSTON STRONG!”
It’s events like this that create the ultimate runner’s high. Thank you to all who organized, showed up, donated, volunteered, and cheered!
