Today we ran the Recycle 5K in Bountiful, Utah; a Fun Run sponsored by the South Davis Recreation Center (our new gym of choice!). We have been very impressed with SDRC’s races. Our most recent race was the Sweethearts 5K in February. SDRC are always well organized, offer quality Tek T-shirts, finishing medals for all racers, and nice prizes. Apparently after 6 years of races they have a closet filled with a lot of “leftovers”. So, instead of throwing out all of those old T-shirts, race bibs, bags, medals, prizes, trophies…why not “reuse them”? And thus, the RECYCLE 5K Fun Run was born.
For just 5 bucks everyone would show up and get a random bib number from a past race, and a really nice “mystery” race shirt. Everyone crossing the finish line would also get a really nice random winners medal, and their choice of prizes, first-come-first-served.
We ran the event with Wife’s brother and sister-in-law. It ended up being a very chilly, rainy day – but that didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirts and there was a nice turn-out. In light of last Saturday’s shocking tragedy in Boston, I think there was an even greater determination today for people to just “get out there” and do something active; because we CARE, and because we CAN!
There’s no better community of kind, helpful, energetic, happy people in the world than runners. An attack on Boston is an attack on all of us, and it hurts. We feel so frustrated, horrified, helpless, angry…How do we respond? By lacing up our shoes, going out the door and running, of course!
The four of us were pretty psyched to all score TRIATHALON medals (yeah, I know…but we like to think that running in the rain qualified us for at least the “swimming” portion of that event…ha ha). We had a lot of fun, and we look forward to many future races with SDRC!
WIFE = finished at approximate 29 minutes! (Woot Woot! finishing sub-30 was her goal!)
UTAHMAN = finished at about 35 minutes (which isn’t too great, but at least I finished, right?)
This Monday April 22nd UtahMan and Wife will be participating in a special fundraising Fun Run to show support for Boston. We will become “Runners for Boston”, hastily and lovingly organized by our awesome friends at Salt Lake Running Company
We are really excited to be able to TAKE ACTION and DO something for our brothers and sisters in Boston. This event promises to be a BIG one. In fact, according to a recent email to registered participants, SLRC seems a wee bit panicked.
We have received an overwhelming response to our fun run. Initially, we expected roughly 100 people. What we now expect, is an entire community getting together to show their immense support for the members of our running family who have been affected by last Monday’s tragedy. We are so impressed, and yet feel slightly unprepared for the number of people who will be attending this event
When they say “an entire community” we know they aren’t kidding! About 15 minutes after they sent out the original invite yesterday their server crashed. By the time I got on (at about 25 minutes), registration had surpassed 1,300. I can only imagine where we are at right now! That is pretty dang cool, and we are pretty dang excited to be a part of it.
NOTE: This Race starts at SLRC located on 700 East 2500 South at 7:00 PM. Registration is officially closed, but anyone is encouraged to just show up anyway. Shirt sales / donations begin at 5:30 PM. There is NO PARKING at this location! Everyone is being encouraged to park FAR, FAR, AWAY – and/or, take public transportation. Since we don’t have the option of walking or public trans, we plan to allow LOTS of time to park about 1.5 miles away and walk (it will make a good pre-race warm-up).
IF YOU CAN’T RUN FOR BOSTON, PLEASE DONATE FOR BOSTON HERE!
