Our February Race was the South Davis Sweethearts 5K and Cupids 1K held on Saturday Feb. 9, 2013. Here is a little recap of our race day.

It was cold! But, definitely not in the same “cold” class as January’s sub-zero Commitment Day 5K Race! (Brrrrr…nothing’s gonna top, er bottom (?), that race temp!)

The Sweetheart 5K is designed as a fun “family race”. For our family, it marked the final race we can participate in as an entire family for at least the next 18 months since our oldest daughter left just 4 days later to serve a full-time mission in Tennessee for our church.

Shout-out to “Corset Man” who braved the cold to entertain us all!

Since we were doing this as a “family fun event”, we weren’t in this one for setting a PR. However, it was a professionally chip-timed event. Our younger daughter woke with a sore back that morning. But, like a trooper, she opted to still come, but walk the course, and UtahMan (being the awesome Daddy that he is), stayed with her the whole way. My older daughter and I chose to jog the course together. At the very end we had an impromptu “all-out-sprint” in which we attempted to beat each other across the finish line – nearly knocking each other over in the process!

Although the official stats show that I beat Daughter #1 by .057. In all fairness, this official race photo clearly shows she was ahead. 🙂

FINISHING STRONG!

What we loved:

It’s been our experience that you always get a LOT for your money with the Davis Rec Center Races:

  • Organized, cheerful volunteers
  • Water stations
  • Time-chipped start & finish
  • Nice tek t-shirts (in this case, long-sleeved, so they were extra nice!)
  • Finisher Medals
  • Cute awards and themed prize packages (costumes, teams & creativity is encouraged)

What could be improved:

  • Offer a pre-race packet pickup

UtahMan went down early and picked up our packets for us that morning. It worked out fine, but I always prefer an early pick-up option so there’s time to make sure the shirts fit and you can avoid being stuck in lines the morning of a race.

We really enjoyed this fun family fitness event. We look forward to participating in more of them! We are already two races down, with more fun to come as we rock ‘n roll our 2013 Race-Per-Month Challenge! Woot!! ♥ – UtahWife
