You Are What You Drink

August 29, 2012 by UtahMan&Wife

We’ve all heard the saying “You Are What You Eat”, but it’s important to remember that “You Are What You Drink”, too!

English: Sodas and soft drinks at a SupermarketCoffee, alcohol, sodas, juice–even some kinds of bottled water–all have a big impact on our intake of calories, sugar and fat. What’s really surprising is the amount of calories in those beverages that many people consume on a daily basis. Most fail to realize that we are drinking ourselves into obesity. A University of North Carolina study found that Americans consume on average 450 calories a day from beverages — nearly twice as many as we did 30 years ago!

What’s The Big Deal?

One problem is that our entire concept of “serving size” in the land of super-sizing has lost all meaning. What does “one serving” even look like? To complicate matters, many restaurants and cafeterias offer “free refills”, so how in the world can you even keep track anymore?!

An eight-ounce serving of Coca-Cola is 97 calories. But, who drinks only 8 ounces of soda? A 12-ounce can of Coke has 143 calories. A 32-ounce Big Gulp of Coke has 384 calories. Movie theaters call a 16-ounce soda “small,” and the “large” is a whopping 44 ounces!

“Natural sodas”, like Hansen’s, may tout that they do not have artificial colors, flavors, sodium, caffeine, or preservatives. But, like so many drinks (and “food”) these days, they DO have Splenda© which is an “unnatural” chemically-produced sweetener – for many, a gastrointestinal nightmare just waiting to happen – and none of us know what effects it will have long-term.

Think “Diet Soda” is better? Study up on the damaging and dehydrating effects of caffeine and carbonation i.e. dehydration, kidney failure, rapid heart rate, higher blood alcohol levels, anxiety, depression, bone loss… you really want to drink that?

And what about alcohol?

It’s a drug, people – not a drink.

Alcohol = brain altering, calorie packing, dignity killing, life-ending chemical. If you put that crap in you’re mouth, you’re a brain damaged idiot. LITERALLY.

Yeah, yeah. We don’t care what your lame excuse is. There is no excuse for being stupid.

Stop being stupid.

So, What CAN We Drink?

Our body’s principal chemical component is water. It makes up about 60 percent of an adult’s body weight, and over 75% in an infant! It is basic common sense that the only natural way to hydrate and replenish our life force is by drinking water. Remember, “You Are What You Drink”. Without Water, You Are Nothing.

There is nothing out there that can replicate the perfection of pure and simple water. Plenty of other “beverages” try, but they’re just posers and pretenders. Big Business has worked for decades to convince us that water is “boring”, and “tasteless”, and therefore if we drink it WE will be boring, and our life will be tasteless.

Say what?! Water keeps us alive, folks! In the argument of Being Alive vs. Being Dead, we’re going out on a limb here to argue that “Being Alive” rates much. less. boring.

And yet, the ad agencies have been tremendously successful blinding the facts and convincing us that what we drink determines our social status, popularity, financial status, sex appeal and happiness!

Hey, call us crazy, but that old adage “being popular is more important than being alive” just doesn’t cut it with us. (I’m looking at you, Coke and Budweiser).

It’s time to stop kidding ourselves. If we aren’t drinking water, then we are drinking something that is either:

1. dehydrating us

2. making us fat

3. manipulating the chemistry of our brain

4. all of the above!

You are what you drink.

The only question left is, who do you really want to be?

Choose wisely.
