Today we’d like to wish a very happy birthday to our nations’ great American historian, author, lecturer and narrator, David Gaub McCullough.

Born July 7, 1933, Mr. McCullough is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian award. UtahMan & Wife have the highest respect for Mr. McCullough. We’ve read and loved his books. We’ve listened to him lecture and narrate inspiring programs. And a few years back Wife even had the opportunity to meet him in person and shake his hand when he was in Salt Lake City for a Christmas gig. (unfortunately she was too star-struck to think of actually getting a photo with him!)

“…We have to know who we were if we’re to know who we are and where we’re headed. This is essential. We have to value what our forebears – and not just in the 18th century, but our own parents and grandparents – did for us, or we’re not going to take it very seriously, and it can slip away.”

– David McCullough, Knowing History and Knowing Who We Are

History has taught us that nothing great has ever happened without sacrifice and persistence. “Never Give Up! Never Quit!” If George Washington, and all the other young, intrepid Founders of our nation could do what they did, then by willikers, the two of us can certainly do something “brave” too, like sticking to this diet, and choosing to change our lives and our health for the better!
